Before We Start

Every new dog list on the internet has 50 things on it. Most of those items are filler. This is the real list, 23 things, organized by what you'll actually reach for in the first 30 days.

The Five You Need on Day One

  1. A properly sized collar and ID tag. Not a harness, a collar for the ID tag. Even if you use a harness for walks.
  2. A 6-foot leash. Nothing fancy. Nylon or leather. Retractable leashes are worse for training.
  3. A crate sized for your dog's adult weight. With a divider you can adjust as they grow. Wire crates breathe better than plastic.
  4. Food and water bowls. Stainless steel or ceramic, not plastic. Plastic scratches and harbors bacteria.
  5. Food that matches what the breeder or shelter was using. Even if you plan to switch brands, match for the first two weeks to avoid stomach upset.

The Five Training Basics

  1. A training treat pouch. Hands-free, reloads fast.
  2. High-value training treats. Soft, small, smelly. Freeze-dried liver or chicken works for most dogs.
  3. A 15 to 20 foot long line. For recall practice in low-distraction environments.
  4. An enrichment toy or two. A Kong, a snuffle mat, or a puzzle feeder. Tired dogs make better decisions.
  5. A structured training resource. A book or an online course. Our online training program roundup covers six we've tested. For new puppies, Brain Training for Dogs is the lowest-friction starting point.

The Five Home Setup Items

  1. An orthopedic or supportive bed in the right size. See our orthopedic bed roundup if you have a large or soon-to-be-large dog.
  2. A baby gate or two. Manage space first. Train second.
  3. Enzymatic cleaner for accidents. Nature's Miracle or similar. Regular cleaner doesn't remove scent markers.
  4. Poop bags and a dispenser. Biodegradable if you care, whatever fits on the leash if you don't.
  5. A seat belt harness or crash-rated crate for the car. Unsecured dogs in cars are actually dangerous.

The Five Health and Safety Items

  1. Pet insurance policy set up in the first 30 days. See our puppy insurance roundup, the timing matters.
  2. A vet you've already visited. First wellness check in the first 2 weeks so you have a relationship before an emergency.
  3. Emergency vet phone number and address saved in your phone. Not the general vet, the 24-hour emergency one.
  4. Basic pet first aid supplies. Gauze, saline, benadryl (check dosing with your vet), tweezers, styptic powder.
  5. A microchip registration in your name. Most breeders and shelters chip before placement. Register it with your info.

The Three Quality-of-Life Items

  1. A good brush for your dog's coat type. Slicker brush for long coats, curry brush for short. Not a one-size-fits-all brush.
  2. Nail clippers or a grinder. Long nails cause real orthopedic problems over time.
  3. A dog-specific shampoo. Human shampoo is too harsh for canine skin pH.
