Before the List: What the Label Needs
Most dog glucosamine supplements underdose. For a 60 pound dog, you want at least 1,000mg of glucosamine per day, ideally paired with 800mg of chondroitin and 500mg of MSM. If the label doesn't specify the exact mg of each, skip it.
The Ingredient Checklist
Glucosamine 500mg+, chondroitin 400mg+, MSM 500mg+, omega-3 fatty acids. Per scoop or tablet. Multiply by size.
See Joint Supplements on ChewyNutramax Dasuquin with MSM
Vet-recommended, genuine clinical data behind the formulation, high glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM ratios. More expensive than drugstore options, but the ingredient density is why it works. This is the supplement our vet recommended for our senior lab.
Nutramax Cosequin DS Plus MSM
Same manufacturer as Dasuquin, slightly lower-strength formulation, roughly 30% cheaper. For dogs with mild stiffness who don't need the full Dasuquin dose, Cosequin is the value pick.
Zesty Paws Hip & Joint Chews
Palatable soft chews that dogs will take without fuss. Lower ingredient density per chew than Nutramax, but most dogs actually eat them, which matters more than slightly higher doses in a tablet they'll refuse.
Liquid Health K9 Glucosamine
For dogs who refuse both chews and tablets, liquid glucosamine can be mixed into food. Ingredient density is moderate. Dogs seem not to notice it in a bowl of wet food or a fresh food topper.
Chewy Brand Glucosamine Chondroitin
Chewy's in-house brand is priced well and has reasonable ingredient density. Not as well-studied as Nutramax but a fine starting point if budget is a real constraint.
See Chewy's Joint SupplementsWhat Doesn't Work as Well
- Generic multi-vitamin chews with "joint support" as one of 10 claims. Usually underdosed.
- Supplements that list "proprietary blend" without individual ingredient mg.
- Anything sold at grocery stores at $10 for a large bottle. The ingredient density usually doesn't justify the price point.
Joint supplements don't work as a one-time fix. Give them 6 to 8 weeks before you judge results.
How to Stack
Joint supplements work best as part of a stack: quality food, orthopedic bed, daily low-impact movement, fish oil, and glucosamine. Our senior joint pain essay walks through the full combination that worked for our 12-year-old lab.
Need the whole stack?
Chewy carries every supplement on this list plus the orthopedic bed, fish oil, and everything else. Auto-ship saves 5 to 10%.
